Known for its great potential for artificial intelligence applications, NVIDIA’s Blackwell line has generated several controversies in recent weeks. While the company has the desire to ship GPUs belonging to it to China, the United States government has taken several actions to prevent this from happening.

After the country’s president, Donald Trump, stated that he has no intention of allowing any plate from the line to reach the Chinese, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent publicly commented on the matter. According to him, the components will actually be able to reach their political “rival”, but under one important condition.

In an interview with CNBC, Bessent stated that, currently, NVIDIA’s Blackwell line can be considered the “crown jewel” of the United States, but that could change soon. “Considering the incredible innovation taking place at NVIDIA, when Blackwell chips are two, three or four levels down the chip hierarchy in terms of efficiency, at that point they will be able to be sold”, he stated.

China won’t wait for old NVIDIA chips

While Bessent’s words do not represent an official policy of the United States government, they clearly demonstrate the country’s stance towards the Chinese market. Like this, NVIDIA may find itself unable to explore the region againespecially given that their companies will not sit quietly waiting for the arrival of old chips.

The corporation led by Jensen Huang has already made this warning, stating that its absence in China gives space for local companies to grow. The Asian country’s government itself has demonstrated a desire to invest in local companies and has even stated that GPUS like the H20 have espionage resources hidden within them.

Currently, NVIDIA is already preparing for the Vera Rubin line, which should become the natural successor to the Blackwell line. However, the company itself estimates that replacing it with more modern components will take time, given that many of its partners are still working on orders for their current products.

The United States’ block on the sale of GPUs to China is consequence of the importance that artificial intelligence has for its governments. They believe that technology really is the future, and whoever is able to master it first will have a huge advantage on the international political scene.
