This week, the Chinese government began to organize a list of hardware suppliers that are recommended for local companies that want to work with artificial intelligence. Bringing in names like Cambricon and Huawei, it stands out for excluding NVIDIA from its recommendationsno matter how influential the company is in the area.

Similarly, China also does not recommend solutions from AMD or any other foreign company. This demonstrates a new stance by the local government, which intends to develop its own industry and encourage the development of locally created hardware.

The new list will be distributed to ministries and state companiesas well as for various public institutions. While it should not eliminate NVIDIA’s presence in the local market, the intention appears to be to limit the use of the company’s hardware to segments in which they are strictly necessary.

China intensifies trend adopted in other areas

As Tom’s Hardware explains, the new list of recommendations is just one part of a larger initiative by the Chinese government. In the past, local authorities began working to favor x86 CPUs manufactured by companies in China, for example.

In addition, companies operating in the country were also instructed to exchange Microsoft’s Windows for other operating systems. This allowed the emergence and strengthening of alternatives such as HarmonyOS, which operates on both PCs and smartphones and smart TVs.

In the case of NVIDIA, the main difficulty that China faces is the fact that the North American company’s hardware is still the best on the market. Additionally, many training tasks rely on the proprietary CUDA ecosystem, which complicates migration to homegrown alternatives.

However, This does not mean that the local government will give up on this mission. One of the ways he found to stimulate domestically created industries is to subsidize their electricity costs — and, in doing so, try to compensate a little for the inefficiencies of hardware produced in the country.
