China has accelerated its efforts to become an increasingly computationally independent country. Its most recent major advance is UBIOS, a new BIOS-based firmware that computers in the country will be able to use instead of the famous UEFI.
UBIOS was announced by the Global Computing Consortium (GCC), a consortium of more than 10 of China’s biggest technology companies, including names like Huawei, CESI, Byosoft and Kunlun Tech. The acronym refers to Unified Basic Input/Output System, basically just adding the word “unified” in classic BIOS.

For years, the BIOS was the firmware responsible for communication between the operating system and the systems’ CPU, to put it simply. In recent years, we have seen the development of UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface), which has become the new standard on most current machines.
Since UEFI is developed and supported by Western companies, China decided to create its own version, starting directly from the BIOS and completely ignoring current firmware developments.
UBIOS focuses on compatibility and scalability
The GCC highlights that the development of UBIOS does not only aim to reduce dependence on foreign technologies, but also to offer greater compatibility with more hardware configurations and scalability.
Offers of the day:
According to its disclosure, the new firmware works better with multiple CPUs, even if they are different, in addition to offering improved support for architectures other than x86 – such as ARM and RISC-V.

Additionally, UBIOS better supports LoongArch, one of the first mainstream Chinese operating systems.
China’s 5-year plan
It’s probably no coincidence that UBIOS was announced at the same time the Chinese government revealed its new 5-year plan to achieve technological self-sufficiency. The country will invest even more in technology and AI, with the intention of being practically immune to external pressure – as it has been suffering from the USA – by 2030.

It is still difficult to predict the role that UBIOS will play in this function, but we will learn more about the new firmware in November, during the Global Computing Conference 2025 in Shenzhen, organized by the GCC.
