Unofficial information indicates that China may have achieved an important breakthrough in the national development of generative AI. Apparently, a new technology allows training the same model on different servers, with different GPUs and architectures.

Compatibility between GPUs is important for efficient training of generative AI and, while there are already ways to use different architectures for this, the process greatly compromises the performance and efficiency of the hardware. Thus, scientists in China would have found a way to carry out this type of training more effectively.

The information comes from Patrick Moorhead, chief analyst at Moor Insights and Strategy. He says he learned about this mysterious new AI model while participating in a meeting with the country’s executives on another topic.

This could be an important advance for the development of AI in China, especially in facing sanctions from the United States. With little access to the most advanced GPU solutions for AI processing, being able to connect different servers could combine the performance of the few NVIDIA A100 units that already exist in the country with weaker options, such as Huawei’s Ascend 910B.

Sanctions against China result in varied solutions

With the increasing number of restrictions that the US imposes on its own companies and those of its partner nations, it was to be expected that China would seek creative solutions so as not to abandon the development of its technologies.

Smuggling is one of the most obvious alternatives, and apparently it actually happens. However, other more interesting solutions include developing our own chips and modifying domestic GPUs for professional use. Even EUV machines for domestic manufacturing of advanced semiconductors may eventually appear in the country.

If China actually finds a solution to train generative AI on different architectures without major performance losses, all of these components will become useful in future developments.
