In a scenario where hard drives and SSDs still dominate the market, a new technology ceramics can completely change the concept of data storage. The proposal was presented during the Open Compute Project (OCP) Global Summit 2025in San Jose, California, and drew attention for promising to overcome any HD in durability and energy efficiency.

The project was shown on OCP Innovation Villagea space dedicated to solutions that redefine the future of computing, networks and data centers. The media, made from glass and ceramic layers, was delivered in physical samples to event attendees — each containing a digital copy of the United States Constitution.

Eternal and sustainable storage

The innovation is based on the idea that storage should be permanent and ecological. The glass provides the structural base, while the ceramics guarantees resistance to heat, radiation and corrosion. This combination creates a medium capable of preserving data for centuries, without the need for constant energy or replacement of components, as occurs with a HD conventional.

💽 Do you want plenty of space for everything? The 16 TB Seagate Desktop Expansion External HD is the ideal choice for those who need to store large volumes of data safely and quickly ⚡. With rotation of 7200 RPM and connection USB 3.0it ensures stable performance, fast transfer and reliability for backups, videos and professional projects. 💼✨

Visitors were able to see framed samples from the media, called ceramic-on-glassand follow a practical demonstration. Just one common smartphone to read and decode information, without the use of specialized equipment, making access simple and accessible.

A vision of preservation and sustainability

According to the technology’s developers, the goal is to reduce long-term costs and the environmental impact of storage. As the media does not require refrigeration or continuous power, operational expenses and carbon emissions drop dramatically. The solution can benefit big data providers, scientific institutions e digital files that deal with massive volumes of information.

While magnetic disks continue to evolve — as in the case of 40 TB HDDs that stack 12 disks in each drive — the use of ceramics represents a completely new approach. Other companies are already experimenting with similar paths, such as investing in ceramic storage to reduce degradation and increase durability.

🚀 Speed and performance on another level! The 1TB Kingston NV3 SSD elevates the performance of your PC or notebook with technology PCIe 4.0 x4 NVMereaching up to 6000 MB/s reading 🔥. Ideal for gamers and creators, it offers instant starts and ultra-fast loading, as well as a compact and modern design. 💻💨

Between promise and challenge

Despite the enthusiasm, the technology has yet to prove its viability on a commercial scale. Questions like mass production, storage capacity e cost remain open. The prototype presented at the event only holds a few gigabytes, serving more as a technical demonstrator than a final product.

TeamGroup’s new PCIe 5.0 SSD reaches up to 14,900MB/s speed

Even so, experts point out that the union between ceramics e glass can usher in a new era of permanent storageespecially in applications that require long-term security — such as scientific databases, historical archives and artificial intelligence systems.

A new milestone at the OCP Summit

A Open Compute Project Foundationresponsible for the event, highlighted that the advance comes at a crucial time, when artificial intelligence demands increasingly larger volumes of data. According to OCP’s Vice President of Innovation, James Kelly, “The explosion of AI demands new approaches to storage, and ceramic media is a glimpse into the future of data centers”.

Visitors to the OCP Summit left with a symbolic — and possibly historic — souvenir. Each sample represented not just a technical advance, but a paradigm shift: a piece of ceramic that can store human knowledge for centuries, while HDs become museum pieces.
