Recently Intel’s new CEO, Lip-BU Tan, spoke directly to the company’s employees around the world. During the speech, the executive seems to have spoken in a very sincere way, in order to prepare the company for more cuts in the future, while plans are readjusted to define what Intel’s posture will be like from now on.

“20, 30 years ago, we were really the leaders,” the executive would have declared. “Now I think the world has changed. We are not in the top 10 of semiconductor companies.”

It was not a public speech, but Oregonlive had access to what was said. A company spokesman then told the site that Tan referred to the company’s market value, which no longer appears among the top 10 of technology companies.

Intel plans a new cut of 20% of his workforce

The journalists on the page, however, question this interpretation because the CEO would have said nothing about Intel’s appreciation during his conversation with the employees.

“Too late” for Intel to run after Ia training

Not being positioned to take advantage of AI’s great boom is considered one of Intel’s biggest recent errors-including his own former CEO, Pat Gelsinger. Tan did not stop talking about it, including recognizing Nvidia’s dominance in the segment.

The executive said it would be “too late” for Intel to try to compete in the AI training part, with Nvidia’s leadership being “too strong”. The idea of the company now is to focus on Edge Ai (go on the edge).

“This is an area that I believe is emerging, becoming very big and we want to make sure we will capture it,” said the CEO. He also says that three new vice-presidents hired last month will help Intel in the segment.

Intel layoffs should continue

Intel has already declared plans to cut several vacancies in different sectors. Its automotive segment will close, the survey with glass substrates would have been closed and more cuts are foreseen in its manufactures.

Tan believes in “wiping” the company not only to contain expenses, but also to make Intel a more agile company. “The whole process is slow and eventually no one makes any decision,” the CEO said during his speech.

Regardless of the sense of “top 10” that the executive really used in his speech, the company probably has a long way to go back to it.
