At the end of last week, a joint operation between the Federal Police and Federal Revenue officials ended up resulting in the seizure of a million-dollar load of foreign goods that were being smuggled from Paraguay, in Foz do Iguaçu, Paraná. During the action, two people were arrested.

The inspection team was monitoring movement in the Vila Portes neighborhood, an area close to the Ponte Internacional da Amizade customs office, when they noticed a suspicious vehicle loaded with many volumes, leaving a property. When trying to approach the driver, he tried to flee, but was quickly restrained by the police with the support of the Military Police.

Cell phone charges totaled around R$200,000

During the search of the vehicle, agents found a large quantity of high-value cell phones, estimated at more than R$200,000. The operation did not stop there. From this initial seizure, agents were able to locate the apartment that was used as a warehouse for smuggled goods.

Upon entering the property, the team found several volumes of electronic products, such as more cell phones and other high-tech devices. The total value of the goods seized at the scene was estimated at more than R$800,000. In addition to the products, the police also found a second individual who was hiding in the apartment, trying to avoid being approached.

The two individuals were arrested in the act and, together with the seized goods, taken to the Federal Police Station in Foz do Iguaçu, where legal procedures were carried out.

The operation is part of an effort to combat smuggling in the region, as it is a strategic point as it is very close to the border with Paraguay, known as one of the main destinations for illicit goods entering Brazil. This makes the Foz do Iguaçu region, due to its geographic location, a natural corridor for the flow of smuggled goods, and operations like this are essential to weaken organized crime.
