Brazilian moders Paulo Gomes, Jefferson Silva and Felipe Triana were able to modernize GTX 970, increasing their memory capacity. They replaced the standard memory modules of 512 MB to 7 Gbps with 1 GB modules at 8 Gbps.

Prior to modification, the GPU was tested on Benchmark Unigine SuperPosition (8K), initially 800 points. After modification and overclocking, the score almost doubled to 1,500 points. In short, with 1 GB at 8 Gbps, the GPU performed significantly better.

This update also reveals a recurring pattern: GPUs often suffer from memory limitations, which affects their longevity. Even in 2025, companies still launch plates with 8 GB, which only support gaming at 1080p or need short -term upgrade.

In fact, GPUs with the highest capacity of Vram, such as the GTX 1080 IT, remain among the most popular in Nvidia. One of the reasons can be because not all players know the difference between capacity and speed of memories. Not without reason, MSI listed an RTX 5080 with 24GB on its official website.

In September 2014, Nvidia made one of its biggest errors by launching GeForce GTX 970. The plate was marketed as a 4 GB of Vram GPU, but the memory was found to be divided into two blocks: 3.5 GB of high speed and 0.5 GB of low speed, 1/7 of total speed.

The problem resulted in memes and the reputation of the plate as a 3.5 GB GPU. Not to mention the $ 30 that Nvidia had to pay per unit in a court agreement. Despite what happened, The GTX 970, based on Maxwell architecture, is still supported by the latest drivers, even 11 years after the launch.

In short, GTX 970 was a GPU that marked an epoch for its controversy and has now received an upgrade that proves that the creativity of enthusiasts can offer solutions even to old hardware.

The case is also an example of how design limitations can impact long -term products and highlights the importance of GPUS with more robust specifications.
