Bioshock is still seen today as a great game by many fans, and for good reason. Although it didn’t have the best gameplay in the world, it stood out mainly for its plot and narrative that leave the player breathless throughout the entire process.
It’s no wonder that when Netflix announced an adaptation of the game for the small screen, many people were excited about the news. However, this was a few years ago and everything indicated that the project had been shelved for good. Today we know that the film will in fact happen.

Some restrictions by Netflix
The news brings good news and some that may seem bad. The good news is that the film will happen, and it has been confirmed. The bad news is that it will have a very limited budget. The film, which was initially announced in February 2022, the result of a partnership between Netflix and the game’s producers, 2K and Take-Two Interactive, will have a more “personal” vision.
During a panel at San Diego Comic-Con, we learned more details about the film adaptation of Bioshock, which has director Francis Lawrence at the helm of the project. At the event, producer Roy Lee announced that the film is being “reconfigured” to become a more personal work, with a reduced budget.
The move follows Scott Stuber’s replacement as Netflix’s head of film, Dan Lin, who has altered the streaming service’s production strategy to prioritize more modestly budgeted projects.
With Lawrence still attached to direct, the new take on the film seeks to capture Bioshock’s unique philosophical and narrative essence. According to Roy Lee, the production will be less about scale and more focused on a personal perspective, setting it apart from the typical big productions of the genre.
Additionally, Netflix has adjusted its compensation strategy, adopting a more traditional model where bonuses are tied to viewing figures, incentivizing producers to create content that attracts large audiences.
Bioshock movie could still surprise
All in all, the news may not be exactly bad, especially since Bioshock’s plot is very much centered on philosophical questions, so it’s not something that’s extremely dependent on constant CGI battles.
The first game in the Bioshock series, released in 2007, is set in Rapture, an underwater city built as a utopia but which has succumbed to chaos and violence. The game’s intriguing narrative and powerful philosophical vision captivated players, resulting in sequels in 2010 and 2013 and over 39 million copies sold worldwide.
The game’s story is heavily inspired by Ayn Rand’s book “Atlas Shrugged,” which explores themes of objectivism and the struggle between individualism and the collective, reflecting on the complex moral and ethical issues present in the world of Rapture.
Bioshock not only revolutionized video game storytelling, but also introduced deep philosophical concepts, challenging players to ponder the nature of freedom and power. As a result, the series has become widely recognized for its complex story rich in symbolism, standing out as a milestone in the gaming industry.
With anticipation running high, fans will surely be eagerly awaiting to see how Lawrence’s vision brings Rapture to life on the big screen, staying true to the spirit of the game while exploring new narrative possibilities.
This approach could set a new standard for video game adaptations, showing how creativity and innovation can thrive even within budgetary constraints, who knows? So, are you excited?
