Confirmed by Nintendo during the official announcement of the Switch 2, the backwards compatibility of the new device is considered by it as “the best way” for your consumers. The statement was made by the company in a statement sent to Game File, after being asked about what the platform’s third party support will be like.
“We decided that the best direction to take would be for consumers to be able to play their previously purchased Nintendo Switch software on its successor”, stated the Japanese company. She also explained that she will soon detail the list of specific games that should not run well on the new platform.
The expectation is that the backward compatibility limitation should be linked to titles that require very specific resources or accessorieslike Ring Fit Adventure. However, the lack of more precise technical information on the Switch 2 makes it a little difficult to imagine what the exact selection of exceptions will be.
Switch 2 represents a new moment of continuity
Although for younger players Nintendo’s decision seems to be something unprecedented in its history, in practice it marks the continuity of an old tradition. Until the Nintendo 3DS, the company’s portables were always backwards compatible with at least the previous generation of products in the same line.
The same was true with the company’s consoles up until the Wii Uwhich could spin Wii discs (which, in turn, was compatible with the Game Cube). In the case of the Switch 2, it will play both the physical and digital games of its predecessor, and the expectation is that it will also be able to enjoy the features of the Nintendo Switch Online subscription.
So far, all the Japanese company has confirmed is the look of the device and some of its features, including a larger screen and Joy-Cons with a redesigned design. More official details about the hybrid console should only emerge on April 2nd, when it will gain a dedicated Direct broadcast.
