If we could go back in time, more specifically to the year 1986, and show some child from that time what today’s game graphics look like, it’s likely that they would play their Atari, Super Nintendo or Master System in the trash, given the abysmal difference in quality between games from each era.

However, even with photorealistic graphics and varied game mechanics, old games continue to be popular. Especially among audiences over 30 years old. The reason for this is that nostalgia sells. And that’s why Atari decided to release a special edition of its classic gaming console, the Atari 7800. Called the Atari 7800+the new model is compatible with the original cartridges and now includes an HDMI connection.

Atari 7800+ Details

The Atari 7800 is part of the brand’s third generation of video games and was released in 1986, succeeding the Atari 5200. It competed with consoles such as the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) and the Sega Master System, selling around 10 million units.

Visually, the Atari 7800+ looks a lot like the original, but it’s a bit smaller. In addition to the HDMI port, which allows it to be used with modern TVs, it comes with the CX78+ joystick, which maintains the classic design but adds wireless connectivity.

There is also the CX40+ controller, famous for its characteristic Atari console joystick. This accessory is also wireless and sold separately.

As for games, the Atari 7800+ plays both Atari 7800 and Atari 2600 cartridges. The console package includes a game cartridge Bentley Bear’s Crystal Quest. The games Berzerk e Bounty Bob Strikes Back are available for purchase separately.

Users can choose between playing in widescreen format or in the original 4:3 aspect ratio.

The Atari 7800+ is expected to launch in late 2024, but is already available for pre-order. In the United States, prices are:

  • Joystick CX78+: US$ 34,99 (R$ 192)
  • Joystick CX40+: US$ 34,99 (R$ 192)
  • Cartridge Berzerk: US$ 29,99 (R$ 165)
