ASUS today launched its new portable gaming device, the ROG Ally X, for a suggested retail price of $799.90. Currently, users can purchase the device from only two locations: Best Buy or the ASUS Online Store.

It is the successor to the ROG Ally, launched in June 2023 and brings several improvements over the previous model – both in performance and in its features. Even though it maintains the AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme APU, its RAM is now 24GB LPDDR5 and it can reach a clock speed of up to 7.5 GHz.

However, the biggest improvement seen in the ASUS ROG Ally X is its battery, which now offers twice the capacity of its predecessor. The new model has an 80Wh battery, giving you the support to play longer with the laptop.

The manufacturer has also redesigned its motherboard to accommodate larger SSDs – up to the 2280 format. Even though it already comes with a 1TB NVMe SSD, users can swap it for larger capacities. Considering that the ROG Ally was quite limited in this regard and only came with 500GB, this is already a great achievement.

ASUS ROG Ally X Improvements

With the launch of the ASUS ROG Ally X for $799, users also see the arrival of the new Armoury Crate SE 1.5 interface – allowing for greater customization and with a standard similar to that seen on consoles.

In terms of the laptop itself, specific changes have been made to its ergonomics and to improve the cooling of its components. While we have a 4.5mm increase to provide more comfort during long hours of gaming, we have fans that are 23% smaller – but that bring 24% improved airflow.

The shape of the ASUS ROG Ally X has also become a little more rounded, adapting to your hands as you use the laptop. The manufacturer has also reorganized the buttons and directional pads, as well as the inclination of the triggers to make it easier to press them.

Additionally, the macro buttons are smaller and the buttons have stiffer springs, with a 5 million life cycle. Another point worth noting is that there is now an additional USB Type-C port that supports Thunderbolt 4 – allowing you to use third-party docks and even eGPUs.
