ASUS this week also announced an add-in card to add Thunderbolt 5 to your PC using the PCIe 4.0 connection. The ASUS ThunderboltEX 5 is very similar to the Gigabyte Thunderbolts 5, but has some interesting differences that should be highlighted.

The design is very similar between the two models, as are the connections. In other words, the Thunderbolt 5 card also offers three mini DisplayPort ports and two USB Type-C ports, which are located on the back of the case as usual for cards connected to PCIe. Monitors up to 8K at 60Hz can be connected.

The main highlight of the ASUS model is that the company promises 120Gbps in both directions, while the Gigabyte card only offers 80Gbps in both directions. However, ThunderboltEX 5 can daisy-chain a total of five devices, while Gigabyte’s option can daisy-chain up to ten devices in this configuration.

The energy part also has curious differences. The ASUS Thunderbolt 5 model has only a 6-pin PCIe connector, but the company promises up to 130W of total Power Delivery. Meanwhile, Gigabyte’s Thunderbolts 5 only reaches 100W.

However, only devices compatible with Flexible FastCharge can take advantage of 130W, because this number can only be reached by connecting both USB ports at the same time. Thus, one of the connections offers a maximum of 96W and the other is at 34W.

ASUS Thunderbolt 5 Card Support and Compatibility

Unfortunately, like Gigabyte, ASUS has not yet released pricing and availability for its ThunderboltEX 5 card. However, we do have important support and compatibility information.

The most important thing is that the ASUS Thunderbolt 5 card only supports motherboards from the manufacturer itself. The limitation is not explained, appearing only as a footnote on the product’s official website.

Additionally, ASUS only mentions support for Windows 11 (64-bit). As we know, Windows 10 now has its days numbered, but it is notable that the company also does not talk about Linux.
