ASUS has just launched its NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 GPU with GDDR6 memory and, because it uses a reduced model, it is expected that the price will also be a little lower than the other versions, right? Wrong, dear readers.
The start of sales of the ASUS Dual GeForce RTX 4070 12GB GDDR6 EVO graphics card indicated that its price will be $569.99 in the United States – $15 more expensive than the white RTX 4070 with GDDR6X and “OC” (it is currently selling for $554.99).
According to NVIDIA, the main difference between the two models – GDDR6 and GDDR6X – is in the speed of the memory chip soldered to the PCB. While the “original” model uses 21 Gbps, the current ones reach 20 Gbps. Even keeping the same specifications, the bandwidth also sees a drop from 504 GB/s to 480 GB/s.
In a way, no one wants a slower product for the same price as the fast version, but this scenario is the “worst outcome” possible – with the model costing more than its original version, which has improved memory.
NVIDIA and other manufacturers could apply a small price reduction to encourage sales of GeForce RTX 4070 GPUs with GDDR6 – even if it were a 5% cut in the price charged for GDDR6X. However, ASUS and possibly other manufacturers will not apply this type of boost and this should be reflected in sales.

ASUS and NVIDIA in the GDDR6 memory controversy
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 GPUs with GDDR6 memory are not exclusive to ASUS, with the first ones being mentioned by manufacturers such as Galax – which was one of the first to mention the change in hardware specification.
NVIDIA later confirmed that it would officially introduce GDDR6 versions onto the market. However, they will not replace GDDR6X models, but rather “coexist” – which could lead many consumers to make a mistake.
Things became even more complex when it was seen that several boxes did not even mention which model the consumer would be buying – whether it was a GeForce RTX 4070 with GDDR6 or with GDDR6X. Although ASUS displays the information, the others are not following this pattern and it is expected that confusion will be caused.
Although NVIDIA claims that they were produced to meet “strong demand”, there are reports that the latest shipments of Micron’s GDDR6X modules did not have their use certified by quality control – leading to the use of the slower models to avoid shortages in the industry.
