ASRock is preparing for the launch of the AMD B850 midrange motherboard series in early January. There will be 14 models launched and the news confirms a rumor released in August. The line will feature designs in white, black or a combination of both.

There will be three B850 Phantom Gaming series cards, and based on the information, this is the only series based on this chipset that will feature all three popular form factors: ATX, Micro-ATX, and Mini-ITX.

ASRock will also bring two Steel Legend motherboards, a LiveMixer design, and new X-branded boards. And the PRO series will be available in seven different models.

Among the models, some will have optional support for WiFi. We currently have no information about B840 motherboards from this company.

Chipset B850

In a presentation on the official channel, AMD has already presented the main features of the B850 and B840 chipsets.

The AMD 800 Series chipsets support processors from the AMD Ryzen 7000, 8000 and Ryzen 9000 lines. In fact, AMD has already announced that the AM5 socket will have a long lifespan, following the AM4 concept.

In the case of motherboards with chipsets released before processors, it is necessary to update the BIOS. After all, when the motherboard was launched, the CPUs launched after them did not exist.

AMD provides updates to ensure support, but care must be taken during installation to ensure that the motherboard recognizes and works correctly with the new CPUs.

When comparing the B850 with the X870 models, the main difference is in the optional PCIe Gen 5 slot for the graphics card. Furthermore, it also does not have native USB 4.0 support. However, several technologies such as USB 4 can be used through third-party chips.

The biggest limitation refers to memory overclocking, without the possibility of overclocking the CPU. As they are cheaper and entry-level motherboards, it should not be a significant problem for users.
