The Netherlands has decided to impose new restrictions on the export of certain equipment and technologies from the country. The new rules will affect its largest companies, such as ASML, the only company in the world that currently exports EUV machinery to manufacture the most advanced processors available.
According to information from Bloomberg, the new sanctions in the Netherlands appear to align with updates to restrictions in the US. The European country’s government does not directly mention its partners, but this would not be the first time that the nation has given in to pressure from the economic power that is currently trying to stifle China’s technological development.
The new restrictions affect specific measurement and inspection equipment aimed at semiconductor manufacturing. Therefore, ASML will not be the only company going through more verification steps before being able to export its products.
China is also not directly mentioned, but the ultimate target of these export restrictions is clear. Even more so taking into account the fact that in August last year, ASML was specifically prevented from not only selling new EUV equipment to the country, but also from offering maintenance on its machines already installed in the territory.
China claims it does not need ASML for the future of its chips
According to Tom’s Hardware, in March last year – even before the Dutch sanction – the president of China stated that the country did not need ASML for its technological development. Xi Jinping has sought the national development of technologies so as not to depend on imports subject to sanctions.

Patent registration for the technology has already appeared in the country, shortly after the August restrictions that the Netherlands imposed on ASML. But there is a long way between registering a patent and practical use of a new technology.
