Along with the introduction of processors Intel Core Ultra 200 Series codename Arrow Lake-SIntel is launching a new line of chipsets, the Intel 800 series. These chipsets arrive together with the new socket, the LGA-1851, which will serve this new line of processors.

A new platform is always a time to update technologies, and in this article we will highlight the main changes that the chipset brings, also summarizing the new features that future 800 chipset motherboards should bring.

PCI Express

The Intel 800 series chipsets introduce PCI Express 5.0 technology to Intel’s platform. The processor will feature PCIe 5.0 connectivity on 20 lines, and another 8 4.0 lines, with a total of up to 28 lines for the processor alone.

The mainboards feature, through their chipset, 24 more lines in the PCIe 4.0 standard. This leads the Intel 800 series platform to feature a total of 48 PCI Express lines, 20 of which are compatible with PCIe 5.0 and 24 with PCIe 4.0.

RAM memory

In memory, Intel 800 series mainboards will have up to 4 slots with up to 48GB per slot, reaching a total of up to 192GB of memory.

This generation will be the first to support only DDR5 technology, reaching up to 6400 MT/s within the supported specification, and being able to go further via overclocking.

This platform supports up to two communication channels between CPU and memories, dual-channel, and can operate with ECC type memories, for those who wish to use data failure correction technologies to ensure greater system stability.

Connectivity

For the rest of the I/O, we have up to 32 USB 3.2 ports and up to 14 2.0 ports, with up to eight SATA 3.0 devices supported. By default, it will have Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3, and may receive dedicated chips on the mainboard to support Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4.

Availability

Intel 800 series-based motherboards will be released alongside Arrow Lake-S processors. Pre-orders for the new generation of Intel Core products will begin on October 24th.
