Qualcomm achieved an important victory against Arm in the legal dispute between the companies regarding the use of the Armv8 architecture in Oryon cores. Arm, however, has not yet given up on preventing its partner from using this technology without specific contracts, and announced that it will seek a new trial.
As disclosed in Qualcomm’s victory announcement, the jury decided that the Snapdragon maker did not violate its agreements with Arm in creating the Oryon. They also found that the development of the technology was already foreseen in contracts previously signed between the two companies.
The panel of judges, however, was unable to reach a consensus regarding Nuvia, the company that customized the Arm-based Oryon chips. It is based on this dispute that Arm has the support to request a new trial. “We are disappointed that the jury was not able to reach a consensus on all of the claims,” an Arm spokesperson said. “We intend to seek a new trial due to the deadlocked jury.”
According to Max Cherney, a Reuters journalist who followed the trial, the judge had asked the companies to try to mediate a new agreement, declaring that neither side had a clear chance of winning.
Arm threatens future of Qualcomm processors
Despite the judge’s statements, Arm is seeking a new trial, showing that it believes it can win. “From the beginning, our top priority has been to protect Arm’s IP and the unparalleled ecosystem we have built with our valued partners for more than 30 years.”
The company says it is committed to “fueling innovation” in the rapidly evolving chip market. If the company manages to win a new trial, the punishment it seeks could seriously threaten Qualcomm’s future.

Using Oryon cores not only in its new Snapdragon 8 for cell phones, but also in the Snapdragon X for PCs and notebooks, Qualcomm has invested heavily in the technology. Arm, however, is not just seeking compensation. The company wants the project’s development to be completely erased, even destroying its spreadsheets and documents.
