Apple is expected to close a billion-dollar contract with Google to use the Gemini artificial intelligence model in the development of the new Siri. According to Mark Gurman, from Bloombergthe agreement provides for the payment of US$ 1 billion per year to Google and also includes the use of Alphabet’s system as a basis for improving Siri, whose reformulation is scheduled for 2026.
The decision represents a strategic change for the Cupertino company, which has been trying to accelerate its presence in the generative AI sector. THE Bloombergsources close to the matter claim that the Gemini model used will have 1.2 trillion parameters and will temporarily replace Apple’s internal models.
The system must offer a much greater capacity to process information and understand the context of user requests.
Why did Apple decide to turn to Google?
After testing models from other companies, including OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude, Apple reportedly opted for Gemini for its superior performance in complex tasks. The intention, according to Bloombergis to use Google’s technology as an interim solution while the company works on its own model.
Internally, the project is known as “Glenwood”, and is led by Mike Rockwell, creator of the Vision Pro headset, and Craig Federighi, head of software engineering. The new voice assistant — codenamed “Linwood” — is planned for iOS 26.4.
The agreement calls for Gemini to be responsible for summary and planning functions, which allow Siri to synthesize information and perform more complex tasks. Other features will continue to operate with models developed by Apple itself.
The infrastructure must run on the company’s Private Cloud Compute servers, keeping user data isolated from Google’s network.
Silent partnership

Despite the size of the agreement, Apple is not expected to publicize the collaboration widely. According to Gurman, the idea is to treat Google just as a behind-the-scenes technology provider, unlike the agreement that made Safari’s default search engine.
For Google, the contract reinforces the influence of the Gemini 2.5 Pro, currently one of the best-rated models on the market. For Apple, it represents an attempt to recover lost ground in the AI race.
The promise is to develop, in the coming years, its own model with 1 trillion parameters, capable of competing with Google’s system. The delay in Siri’s AI functions, however, has already forced the company to review the iPhone 16 campaign.
