Apple’s recently released Mac Mini 2024 was disassembled by YouTuber Brandon Geekabit. In the video, the content creator used the base 16/256GB M4 model and discovered what the machine’s architecture is like.
Just like previous Mac Mini models, the entry point to the interior is through the plastic panel on the bottom. There are no exposed screws, so you just need to pry the corners with a putty knife until it comes loose.
Once opened, the stand with openings for the ventilation system will be exposed, and in the center there is a small button cell, which maintains functions such as the clock when the device is disconnected from power. This is the most accessible component and will cause the least hassle when replacing.
Ventilation
Upon removing the metal grille, Brandon Geekabit discovered that it is not only a stylish vent, but it is also connected to the motherboard and functions as an antenna for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
The cooling system consists of a centrifugal fan and a heat sink with a single heat pipe. In the bottom corner, the only speaker that all Mac minis have is also visible.
Storage
By removing the fan and speaker, you can access the motherboard, where an M.2 2230 SSD is connected. This is not a standard model, but a unit with a different pin count. Apple also used a custom SSD controller.
In practice, this means that the storage drive on the new Mac mini is probably not user upgradeable.
Food
The power supply is situated below the motherboard, and as usual, the Mac mini has an internal power supply. Technically, it forms the topmost layer of the system when placed right side up. Therefore, it dissipates its heat through the aluminum housing, as it does not receive ventilation from the cooler.
Processor
The last part of the disassembly carried out by Brandon Geekabit is the removal of the M4 chip’s heatsink, which is relatively small. It is thanks to it that the chip is able to increase clock speeds, even in warmer ambient conditions.
