Apple M4 Max outperforms RTX 4070 and RTX 3080 Ti in Blender test

The Apple M4 Max, a high-end option among Apple’s new processors that made its debut in the MacBook Pro, showed in a benchmark test that it should not be underestimated. The little guy outperformed the RTX 3080 Ti and the RTX 4070 in Blender Open Data, falling just behind the RTX 4080 for notebooks.

It’s interesting to note that NVIDIA’s GPUs have a considerably higher benchmark sample than the M4 Max in Blender data, but the results report an average, which shouldn’t fluctuate that much.

At the time of writing this post, the M4 Max scored 5,209.01 in Blender Open Data, as shown in the image above. It’s a little more than the RTX 3080 Ti, which comes in at 5,190.39, and a little more than the RTX 4070, which comes in at 5,128.87. Above the Apple component we have the RTX 4080 for notebooks, with 5,321.43 points.

The M4 Max is the most powerful version among the three M4 in Apple’s latest series of processors. Accompanied by the standard M4 and the M4 Pro, the three appear as options on the MacBook Pro, and also on the 2024 Mac Mini. Apple, however, would be preparing an even more powerful version, the M4 Ultra, which should appear on the new model of the Mac Pro.

Outperforming an RTX 4070 using integrated graphics is a feat in itself, evident by comparing component sizes. But it should also be noted that, as mentioned, the M4 series made its debut in notebooks and mini PCs, making energy efficiency a very important aspect for these products.

Unfortunately, Apple is not very detailed in its official disclosure of the specifications of its products. Unofficial estimates point to a TDP of just 40W for the M4 Pro, so the Max should be a little above that. With dedicated GPUs becoming increasingly power-demanding, the M4 Max’s achievement becomes even more impressive.
