With the continued advancement of technology, artificial intelligence (AI) has become an integral part of the mobile experience. And Apple is playing catch-up to its competitors in this race, currently preparing to expand its AI integrations beyond ChatGPT.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the company will announce at least one more deal to add Google Gemini to its devices this fall. This news is accompanied by rumors about future partnerships and a potential new business model based on AI.

Google Gemini integration and rumors of other partnerships

So far, ChatGPT has been the only AI model confirmed for integration with Apple devices, but that’s about to change with the likely addition of Google Gemini.

Gemini has been a recurring theme in iOS 18 rumors, and Apple’s software chief Craig Federighi hinted at a deal with Google shortly after the keynote at WWDC 2024. The integration promises to expand the AI capabilities of Apple devices, giving users a more diverse array of virtual assistants.

In addition to Google, Apple is also exploring other partnerships. Anthropic has been mentioned in several rumors, and Gurman suggests that a deal with the company could be announced soon. However, Meta was quickly ruled out as a potential partner due to the poor quality of its chatbot, Llama.

Apple Intelligence and the future of AI at Apple

Integrating chatbots is just the beginning. Apple is developing its own AI platform, called Apple Intelligence, which is expected to launch in beta this fall.

Rather than just being a set of additional features, Apple sees AI as a new avenue for direct profits. Gurman suggests that in the future, the company could release Apple Intelligence features only to subscribers, creating a new revenue stream.

While Apple Intelligence will initially only be available on the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max models, it’s unclear whether the features will be enough to power a major device upgrade cycle. There are also questions about the quality and usefulness of the new AI features. However, Apple will benefit financially by taking a cut of its partners’ chatbot subscriptions, even as it continues to develop its own AI solution.

During the transition period, third-party AI services like Google Gemini and ChatGPT will serve as an interim solution while Apple finalizes its own generative AI system. For users, this means more choice and a richer, more varied AI experience, even if it sometimes results in incorrect answers or unexpected suggestions.
