Micron announced that it will no longer sell products in its Crucial line, aimed at home consumers. This means that we will no longer have RAM memory modules or SSD drives of different formats coming out for PCs. And the justification, unsurprisingly, is the high demand from the professional segment for AI processing.
“AI-driven growth in data centers has led to a surge in demand for memory and storage. Micron has made the difficult decision to exit Crucial’s consumer market to improve supply and support our larger, strategic customers in faster-growing segments,” said Micron executive Sumit Sadana.
The company is grateful for the “passionate community” of consumers who will no longer be served for the company to focus on AI. “We would like to thank our millions of consumers, hundreds of partners and every member of the Micron team who has supported the Crucial journey for the past 29 years.”
Speaking of team members, the company does not yet reveal how many people will be sent away, but emphasizes that it will look for “relocation opportunities” for open positions within the company, in order to reduce the number of layoffs.
Micron seeks to create value for shareholders
Crucial products will continue to ship until the end of the second quarter of fiscal 2026, which is until the end of February. Warranties for products already sold that exceed their deadline must also be honored until the end of their validity, and the Crucial line will continue to be sold while supplies last.
“This decision reflects Micron’s commitment to its ongoing portfolio transformation, and the resulting alignment of its business with secular, profitable growth drivers in memory and storage,” the company says. “By focusing on core commercial and enterprise segments, Micron seeks to improve long-term business performance and create value for strategic customers as well as shareholders.”
