The RTX 5090 was involved in the report of another case of power connector melting, which in this case spoiled to the user’s source, according to their Reddit post. To make matters worse, the person guarantees that he used only official cables and did not try to overclock, but still had to face the problem.
The plate in question is a MSI RTX 5090 Gaming Trio, which suffered its accident accompanied by a Corsair SF1000L source, compatible with ATX 3.1. The cable used was the official 12V-2 × 6 that accompanies the source, certified to 600W.
“I didn’t move with any OC configuration, I surrounded as it was straight from the box,” says the post author, who signs as Roachard on Reddit. “I bought about a month behind a best buy. I saw cable posts melting and thought it would be safe if I was away from custom cables. Apparently it was not yet safe to use the original cables of manufacturers.”
As you can see in the images, not only the connectors were damaged, but on the source side formed a melted plastic lump.

The concern of warming in the RTX 5090 power connectors began even before the launch of the plates, as this was a serious problem in the launch of the RTX 40 series.
NVIDIA chose to maintain the same connection format, ensuring that it had solved the problems and we would not see the same situation happen to its Blackwell -based plates.
Reddit has organized a megathread where it is organizing case reports involving connectors melting in the RTX 50 series. So far, the forum says it has “confirmed” five events: four in RTX 5090 models and one with a RTX 5080.

Certainly you can not yet call a widespread problem as it happened in the RTX Series. However, it can be difficult to get a GPU replacement with the scarce stocks of the RTX 50 plates.
