We had another report of a power connector on an RTX 5090 last weekend. This is an unspecified MSI model, so it follows an adapter with new yellow pins that the company has used in the 12V-2 × 6 connector-which end up making it very evident when they burn.

The yellow color in the MSI connectors was not placed there to highlight burnt pins in case of an accident. The purpose of the company with design is to facilitate the visualization of the user when connecting their GPU correctly. The idea is that if you have any yellow color appearing, the connector has not yet entered.

The solution follows the argument that appeared a lot in the problems of the past generation, with the RTX 4090 that was infamous by the burned connectors. At the time, Nvidia stated that most problems were caused by user error. The problem is less frequent with the RTX 5090, but it still happens.

“In recent days I’ve been facing a problem of my monitor suddenly turning off and showing a message ‘Displayport is not connected.’ I reinstated the driver and tried everything to fix, including working with Nvidia support,” says the User Versautegurke on Reddit. “However, I later found out that the cables had melted.”

As always in these cases, it is difficult to prove whether or not it was a user error in the connector fitting.

RTX 5090 does not seem to have been harmed in this case

It is interesting to note that MSI uses yellow connectors in its sources and adapter cables that accompany plates from the RTX 50 series. The latest report is a burning adapter, because the user’s source was a 1500W HX1500i Corsair.

Luckily for the person, the GPU connection itself seems intact, based on shared photos. The author of the post ponders the possibility of the plate was not damaged, but did not offer until this post an update confirming or not.

This case was posted on Subreddit PCMASTERRACE and has not yet appeared on NVIDIA’s Megathreaded especially dedicated to these connector melting cases.
