O Google is developing an update for the Android operating system that will enable applications to capture photos in Ultra HDR. This means users will be able to capture high dynamic range images directly from apps like Instagram, without resorting to the device’s camera software.

The news came in CameraXa Jetpack library that provides APIs for building camera apps on Android.

Devices like the Galaxy S24, Pixel 7, Pixel 8, and OnePlus 12 already have Ultra HDR capture capabilities, but only through the default camera app. In addition, to enjoy HDR photos, a screen that supports this technology is essential.

Ultra HDR is a Google innovation that stores the captured color spectrum in the photo file. Thus, each file contains both the SDR and HDR versions of the image, optimizing viewing on non-compatible screens and preventing the unwanted “effect” of light overexposure — typical of excessive processing.

Ultra HDR in Android Apps

Mishaal Rahman, journalist do Android Authoritydiscovered the update through reverse engineering code. He identified the “getSupportedOutputFormats” method in the CameraX API under the “ImageCaptureCapabilities” command, which allows camera apps to capture photos in Ultra HDR, if the smartphone is compatible.

In January, with the launch of Galaxy S24Instagram announced that Samsung devices would be the first to support HDR image posting, maintaining quality throughout the upload. However, this did not include Ultra HDR directly through the Instagram app.

The benefit of this upcoming update is to make sharing HDR images easier. Users will be able to use Instagram’s built-in camera to take HDR photos, eliminating the need to switch between the camera app and Instagram to choose an image from the gallery. Other social platforms are also expected to benefit from this improvement.

Therefore, people who work with social networks, such as digital influencers or social media, will be able to take greater advantage of Instagram even without having an iPhone. Currently, one of the main reasons to buy an iPhone is that it is better for posting on Instagram. But Android is getting closer and closer to Apple’s phone in this regard.
