The Top500 list, which accompanies and categorizes the most powerful supercomputers in the world, reached this week in its 65th edition. The updated version of the ranking puts El Capitan first in terms of computational performance, followed by Frontier, both using AMD hardware.

The El Capitan uses Chips AMD Instinct Mi300A and EPYC 24C, winning 1.7 Examflows in FP64 performance. The Frontier, in turn, is equipped with Instinct Mi250X and EPYC 64C, and has elapsed 1.3 Examflows, ensuring the first and second position on the list for the same component supplier.

Intel appears in third position with dawn, which uses Xeon and GPUS Intel Max processors for data centers. He has just entered the level of Examflops, stinging 1.012, according to the Top500 listing.

The first three positions are from companies in the US, with computers located in the country. China, which has emerged as the country’s main competitor in technological advances, no longer reports performance data from its supercomputers to the Top500.

AMD does not yet exceed Intel in number of equipped systems

The Top500 supercomputer fourth in computational performance is Germany’s Jupiter Booster. It reaches 793.4 Petaflops, using Nvidia’s GH200 Superchip.

Nvidia appears in 13 of the systems on the TOP500 list, demonstrating a proportionally quick adoption of its Grace Hopper architecture for high performance components.

In the total count of supercomputers, however, Intel is far from being achieved, appearing in 294 of the 500 listed systems. AMD is in second position, equipping 173 platforms.

Nvidia stands out in energy efficiency

The Top500 list also makes an alternative supercomputer ranking that calls Green500, highlighting the systems for their energy efficiency.

In this case, Nvidia’s Grace Hopper architecture is very successful, winning the first and second position. The most efficient supercomputer is Jedi, from Germany, with 72.7 gigaflops/watts, while second place is France’s Romeo-2025, reaching 70.9gflops/W.

AMD appears in third position, equipping Anadra 2, also from France. The supercomputer was at 69gflops/W in the ranking.

This is the measure where Intel becomes worse. AMD and Nvidia take over ranking positions to ninth place, and Intel will appear only in tenth place with Henri in the United States. The system uses 65.4gflops/w.
