AMD is interested in Taiwan’s economic and technological growth, negotiating with the country’s government to build two buildings for research and development.

According to Taiwan Economic Daily, the company wants to establish an R&D center in Tainan and another in Kaohsiung – with the project costing around $270 million to complete. The government may provide a $100 million subsidy to help with the initiative.

In return, AMD will collaborate with universities and institutions in Taiwan to hire professionals – with an estimated 400 job openings, including 200 that will be selected from all over the world.

This is part of the local government’s plans to convert the territory into an “Artificial Intelligence Island” – providing manufacturers and developers with a massive platform where they can make progress in this market.

With Taiwan’s “Global R&D Innovation Partnership Plan” – which AMD is part of – the proposal is to attract tech corporations to set up bases in the region, with incentives such as reduced fees and financing.

Given NVIDIA’s strong interest in Taiwan, it’s no surprise that AMD also wants to move forward with setting up research and development facilities within the country – even faster than its competitor.

Considering that the company has invested heavily in artificial intelligence and that CEO Jensen Huang has met with several other top executives from companies like MediaTek and TSMC, it is notable that the view that the country is only for supplying chips and technology is changing and that there may be more interests involved.

Recently, AMD acquired companies such as Silo AI and ZT Systems – both specialized in presenting AI solutions and which may also be included in the grand plan to reinforce its activities in Taiwan for this purpose.

Regional conflict

It is important to remember that investing in Taiwan has not been seen favorably for some time, considering China’s interest in reclaiming the territory as its own.

There have been threats of invasion and even strategic actions by the Chinese government, and this has brought about various reactions from the international community – mainly from the United States, which, in addition to the sanctions imposed against the country, has also made threats if military movement on Taiwanese soil were to take place.
