AMD’s current generation of mobile APUs, the Ryzen AI 300 “Strix Point,” already features interesting integrated graphics, but the Strix Halo series promises a considerable improvement. According to a leak, The performance of the next iGPUs could be equivalent to a GeForce RTX 4070 mobile at 80w.

The leak comes from ASUS with its next gaming tablet, which will be equipped with AMD Strix Halo SKUs. Information such as the die size and consumption of these APUs (or a single APU) are some of the leaked features.

Starting with the die size of AMD’s next-generation mobile APUs. It will be double the size of the current generation with the Ryzen AI 300, measuring 439 mm² in a multi-chiplet design, divided into 66 mm² for the CPU (2x CCD) and 307 mm² for IOD with GPU. Therefore, much more technology fits into the design.

Each CCD has 8 Zen 5 cores, bringing the total number of cores to 16 as there are two complex cores. The larger die with integrated graphics should also offer a larger number of cores with the top-of-the-line iGPU, which should still be based on RDNA 3.5.

The AMD Strix Halo APUs will have three power profiles (at least on this ASUS tablet): 55w, 85w and 120w, values that only reinforce that this high-end series will have SKUs with robust configurations. In a tablet configuration with 128 GB of LPDDR5 RAM, the total TDP would reach 133w, quite a lot for a laptop that is not a notebook.

Another part of the leaked document compares the consumption of the Strix Halo SKU (probably the top of the line), with a device equipped with a 35w Intel CPU plus an 80w GPU. The code for this GPU is GN21-X6, which corresponds to the GeForce RTX 4070 for notebooks.

This is something that only reinforces a rumor from months ago, with benchmarks that showed that AMD Strix Halo APUs would compete against the dedicated GeForce RTX 4060M and RTX 4070M GPUs. This possibility is further reinforced by the size of the die of this next generation, especially when we talk about the GPU die, which is quite large.

If these leaks and rumors turn out to be true, the graphics power of AMD Strix Halo mobile APUs has everything it needs to replace even mid-range dedicated notebook GPUs, making projects less complex and, consequently, cheaper, while delivering great performance. We’ll just have to wait and see.
