Increasingly demanding games have challenged the practical value of 8GB capacity GPUs today, but AMD scientists have recently shown that putting more memory on plates is not the only possible solution. Using Work Graphs with Mesh Nodes they managed to create a 3D tree demo that occupy only 51kib of plate capacity.

The KIB unit refers to Kibibyte, and is very close to the traditional KB. According to the demonstration, the same scene as AMD researchers used as an example of 34.8GIB (38GB) without the use of the technique they are developing. It is a difference of 666,352 times in occupied memory.

The “trick” is to generate the trees in real time, with the level of detail required only by the frame that appears at every moment. Traditionally, trees geometry would have to be stored in the memory of the video card while they appear, but with the new technique it is stored only a simple code to instruct GPU in tree generation.

AMD shows once again the potential of Work Graphs

Work Graphs allows a video card to make instructions to itself, dispensing communication with the CPU for some cases. Mesh nodes are an extension of technology, which specifically serves to instruct the GPU to “draw”.

That is, while the technique requires less the memory capacity of a video card, it may end up requiring more of its graphic processing. Depending on the rendered objects and optimization, the exchange can be positive for the final performance.

Same objective, different approaches

The technique demonstrated by AMD scientists are reminiscent of Nvidia’s neural texture compression (NTC). GeForce’s owner wants to create a means of reducing the use of their GPUS’s memory capacity as well, but following another way.

Earlier this year the company demonstrated a up to 96% reduction in the use of memory of a plate using texture compression through neural processing.

They are different means of reaching the same result, but it is noteworthy that Work Graphs are not limited only to Nvidia GPUS.
