AMD Ryzen Z2 line will have three models with 12 CUs, reveals leak

The next generation of AMD Ryzen Z2 processors, especially aimed at notebooks, will feature three different models, all with 12 Compute Units (CUs). This is what the most recent leak about the line points out, which rules out the possibility of a CPU with 16 units.

The information comes from Golden Pig Upgrade Pack, on Bilibili. The “leaker” has a history consistent with his rumors and says that the supposed Ryzen Z2 Extreme X, with 16 CUs, has been cancelled. So, there would be three SKUs left:

• Ryzen Z2E com 12 CUs RDNA 3.5
• Ryzen Z2 com 12 CUs RDNA 3
• Ryzen Z2G com 12 CUs RDNA 2

It is noteworthy that, if the leak is correct, AMD chose to change the generation of the RDNA architecture instead of the core count. Thus, all Z2 models have 12 CUs, but with different performances.

The folks at Tom’s Hardware speculate that the 16-core processor may have been abandoned due to energy demands. Since these are customized models for laptops, efficiency is especially important.

Furthermore, the site further estimates that the Ryzen Z2G could be a modified Ryzen 6000, based on its specifications.

Ryzen Z2 Extreme arrives in early 2025

We are still in the rumors and leaks phase, so as always a little skepticism is important. Additionally, we don’t know if we’ll see a joint launch for the three SKUs in the new Ryzen lineup.

AMD has officially confirmed the launch of the Ryzen Z2 Extreme for the beginning of 2025. This is the model that appears as “Z2E” in the Golden Pig post, the most advanced in the line. There is speculation that we will see the chip in the next Legion or ROG Ally, but nothing official at the moment.
