AMD this week presented some details about its future MI500 series of AI accelerators, scheduled for 2027. The company plans a real leap in computing in the segment, finally reaching the scale of YottaFLOPS, with the forecast of offering more than 10 in the next 5 years. This would be 100 times more than what current computers are capable of, reaching around 100 ZettaFLOPS.
“The demand for computing is growing faster than ever. Meeting this demand means continuing to advance performance well beyond where we are today,” said Lisa Su, CEO of AMD. “MI400 was the big inflection point in terms of delivering training leadership across all workloads, inference and scientific computing.”
Continuing her speech, the head of AMD highlights the new technologies that will be introduced with the arrival of the MI500 series. “Development of our next-generation MI500 series is well advanced. With the MI500, we will see another huge leap in performance.”
“It is built on our next-generation CDNA 6 architecture and manufactured on 2nm process technology, and uses faster HBM4E memory.”
To offer a very impressive number, AMD chooses to compare its MI500 generation with the MI300X, from 2023. The company promises up to 1,000 times more performance comparing these components, but without going into detail about the comparison criteria.
“With the launch of MI500 in 2027, we are on track to deliver a 1,000x increase in performance for AI over the last four years, making more powerful AI accessible to everyone,” said Lisa Su.
It’s an impressive number, but it’s worth highlighting that between the MI300X and the MI500 we will have a leap from the CDNA 3 to CDNA 6 architecture, accompanied by the evolution from HBM3 to HBM4E and FP4 computing.

It is noteworthy that AMD is still talking about CDNA 6, when the company itself has already stated that it had plans to combine its RDNA and CDNA technologies into a new UDNA, but so far the company has not yet spoken in those terms.
