AMD’s product nomenclature has changed and is now even more confusing. After the company added “AI” to the Ryzen brand, the lineup became harder to follow. And after the launch of the Ryzen 8000 series, the expected next step for laptops was the Ryzen 9000.

However, AMD reserved the 9000 name for desktops, while laptops are now getting the Ryzen 300 series branding.

Early reports of the laptop rebrand started with the names Ryzen 100 series, then 200, and finally 300. The Ryzen 300 series covers the Strix Point and Krackan APUs, while the Ryzen 200 series covers the Hawk Point/Phoenix APUs.

Confusing nomenclature

AMD also planned to use Ryzen 100, but they were only released now. It turns out that the series now exists and refers to the Zen3+ pieces originally known as Rembrandt.

Since the company already has the X000 and X00 series, it is also introducing the Ryzen10 series for low-cost Mendocino chips. These are Zen2-based processors originally designed for entry-level systems like Chromebooks.

The top-end Ryzen 100 model, the Ryzen 7 170, appears to be between the Ryzen 7 6800U and 6800H. It has a standard TDP of 28W similar to Useries components, but maintains boost clocks closer to those of the H series. It is an 8-core Zen3+ CPU with Radeon 680M graphics, which remains unchanged.

Ryzen 100 processors support the FP7-R2 socket and DDR5 memory.

The Ryzen 10 lineup consists of 4-core Zen2 CPUs with LPDDR5 memory support. The Ryzen 3 30 and Ryzen 3 40 have a Radeon 610 graphics card with two Compute Units.

There’s no reason to expect to hear much about these CPUs. It looks like AMD is breathing the last breath of life into its old SKUs, which have been rebranded to sell some more old laptops.

Still, everyone remembers AMD’s marketing efforts to promote the brand new 7000 mobile nomenclature. The company even created spinners with cool names to make it easier to understand, and yet they are renaming a new brand.

Some Ryzen 100 SKUs are using almost identical specs to SKUs that have already been updated (Ryzen 6800H -> 7735H). Check out the new AMD Ryzen 10/100 series below:

Unnecessary Rebrand

If changing names is to help sales, it may be unnecessary. Most users end up paying more attention to the cost-benefit ratio than to the nomenclature. Which means some will buy the cheapest ones for computers and office.

In this case, models such as the Ryzen 3 3200G (Zen 2 architecture) and the Ryzen 5 5500 (Zen 3 architecture) may be the choice for the price, R$494.99 and R$522.50.

More powerful models, such as the Ryzen 7 7800X3D (zen 4 architecture) should be chosen by those who need the performance. Even more so with its cost of R$3,599.99.

Greater doubts may arise in the case of intermediate models such as the Ryzen 5 5600GT, currently priced at R$799.00 (with a special discount) and the Ryzen 7 5700X, which costs R$1,099.00. In the end, many users only focus on performance and the name confusion only hinders those who support them.
