AMD promises Ryzen Z2 Extreme for early 2025

The Ryzen Z2 Extreme is expected to hit the market in early 2025, according to AMD. This revelation was made in a Q&A session with the company, during IFA 2024. Thus, the manufacturer confirmed that the next generation of its popular laptop chip will arrive in the first months of next year.

The processor will be the new version of the Ryzen Z1 Extreme, which is very popular in portable gaming PCs, such as the Legion Go and ROG Ally X. However, the segment continues to grow, and new devices have opted for different CPUs. While MSI is betting on Intel, most manufacturers still prefer AMD, so the timing really seems interesting for a Ryzen Z2 Extreme.

According to Digital Trends, the company did not provide technical details about the new generation of its processor. However, one of its executives indicated that battery life will be a focus for the Ryzen Z2 Extreme. Jack Huynh reportedly said that he wants to play Black Myth: Wukong for three hours on his laptops, not just 45 minutes.

It seems that the new chip’s focus to enable more efficiency and autonomy will be AI features. Features like AMD Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF) can help to “stress” the processor less, resulting in less battery consumption.

Which devices will Ryzen Z2 Extreme appear on?

It’s still too early to guess which laptops we’ll see with AMD’s new chip, but Digital Trends risks talking about the Steam Deck 2.

Valve’s device was a major precursor to the format’s explosion by adopting the Switch’s design for PC gaming. In terms of hardware, however, it has lagged behind. So if the console does get a new version, it would make sense to try to bet on a debut alongside an entirely new chip.

Safer bets, however, would be on devices that already use the Z1 Extreme. That means a new Legion or the upcoming ROG Ally have a good chance of coming with the Ryzen Z2 Extreme when they launch.
