AMD is about to launch its new Ryzen AI 300 and Ryzen 9000 processors, which use the Zen5 architecture – produced in 4nm, the same one they used to bring Zen4. However, the manufacturer points out that the path will follow a different path in the near future.
The company’s CPU designer for over 30 years, Mike Clark, says there are internal plans for the Zen5 architecture to be produced on the 3nm process. He also says this will happen quickly.
According to Clark, AMD wants to have more flexibility when using both nodes for the Zen5 architecture – even if this brings challenges for the corporation.
We need to have this flexibility in our roadmap and it makes sense. However, it is still very difficult to try to have control while working with two technologies and their features, while one may look very good at 3nm, it does not perform well at 4nm because of the energy impact of the transistors that may not be as efficient in comparison and how this affects the design.

AMD will bring Zen5 to 3nm in an agile way
Despite the challenges, the professional also states that AMD’s Zen5 architecture with 3nm is one of the biggest priorities within CPU projects.
We will be delivering 3nm in a short time alongside 4nm; basically they are on top of each other now.
Mike Clark
Despite expectations about the Ryzen 9000, the use of 3nm for AMD APUs – which will belong to the Ryzen AI 300 mobile line – becomes more interesting if we take into account the gain in battery life in devices that will use the hardware.
Several complaints about the power consumption of Phoenix and Hawk Point APUs have led to expectations for this new path, since both use the 4nm process in laptops and notebooks. Having more powerful chips with the Zen5 architecture, with more GPU cores, was one of the public’s biggest concerns regarding power.
In addition to the Zen5 architecture with 3nm, the issue of consumption is also a concern in relation to AMD GPUs with RDNA 3.5 structure. Even with improved efficiency, even in a 4nm process, with more advanced chips it can be a greater help for those looking for new processors for mobile gaming.
Clark says the manufacturer also has plans to bring Zen5c cores to the desktop in the future, but there are still a few things to work out before this can be tested.
If we continue to build compact cores the way we intend, the hardest part will be making sure we get the frequency right so that it balances with the number of cores we put in. But let’s say you’re good at that, then there’s no reason not to put compact cores in desktop as well.
Mike Clark
According to the AMD veteran, using compact cores could mean bringing the same performance from a given core count for less cost or being able to include even more cores on the desktop – which could be an advantage they should explore in the future.
