During Zen5 Tech Day, AMD confirmed that it is already working on the Zen6 and Zen6c architectures – although they did not disclose a forecast for the launch of the first products based on the technology or what process will be used in their manufacture.

This is the first time the company has officially and documentedly revealed that Zen6 is in development and that this will be the name of the successor to the Zen5 architecture. Previous records indicated that it would be codenamed “Morpheus” and would use the 2nm process, but it was not revealed whether the plans were maintained or if something changed over time.

AMD’s CTO, Mark Papermaster, also confirmed that they are already working with the Zen7 architecture – with a team dedicated solely to this structure, similar to what is happening with the development of Zen6.

The manufacturer’s statements raised several questions, such as about the support offered by the AM5 socket. It is possible that Zen6 will also be compatible, analyzing their roadmap which defines that it will continue to receive updates and models beyond 2027 – ensuring its presence in the industry for at least five years.

During the session, Joe commented on the AM5 platform supporting four generations of CPUs. This was meant to be hypothetical, raising the issue of working on a platform design that spans multiple years and generations, rather than starting with a new platform each time. As announced at Computex, we remain committed to supporting the AM5 platform through 2027 and beyond.

AMD will wait to bring Zen6

Considering that AMD made the transition from Zen4 to Zen5 in 22 months, it’s possible that Zen6 will continue to use AM5 – since there are 41 months left until the end of 2027. However, with the arrival of Zen7, it’s expected that a new socket will be launched alongside the architecture and the new processors that will come in the next generation.

Despite the statements, it should take some time before we see updates on its roadmap regarding the two architectures that will come in the future. At the moment, the manufacturer is focusing on the launch of its mobile and desktop CPUs – the Ryzen AI 300 and Ryzen 9000, respectively.
