AMD grew in the third quarter of 2024 to capture 28.7% of the desktop PC market, according to research by Mercury Research. Intel continues with an overwhelming lead of the remaining 71.3%, but the owner of Ryzen has seen a very important turnaround in the last three-month period.

As the graphs below show, AMD had an atypical peak in Q3 2024 that added 5.7% to its market share in desktop PCs. Not only that, it is also worth noting that, since the launch of Ryzen in 2017, this is the year in which the company achieved its greatest presence in the segment.

In the first quarter of 2024, AMD captured 23.9% of the market, its highest number since a peak of 20.6% in 2022. With the new turnaround, the company has a new personal record.

The number is a testament to Ryzen’s popularity. Even with a “lukewarm” launch of the 9000 series, graphics have continued to climb almost continuously since the end of 2022. It is also worth noting the impact resulting from the difficulties that Intel had with its CPUs based on Raptor Lake.

In all areas, AMD has been advancing little by little. Notebooks seem to be the most complicated segment for the red side of the force, as shown in the graph below:

AMD remains firm in servers

As already clear in the company’s financial reports, AMD has done very well in the server area. With an almost non-existent presence in 2017, numbers have risen much more consistently than in any other segment of the company:

While the number achieved in the last quarter is lower than that of desktops, standing at 24.2%, growth is more constant. The result is a profit of almost US$3.5 billion for the company in the segment.
