AMD stated earlier today that its Radeon RX 5000 and RX 6000 series graphics cards would be placed in “maintenance mode” for future driver updates, causing some confusion and raising public criticism. That’s why the company has now updated its statement, trying to explain that this doesn’t necessarily mean that the GPUs won’t be optimized for new games.

In yet another comment to the folks at Tom’s Hardware, AMD says that “new features, bug fixes, and game optimizations will continue to be delivered as required by market needs in the maintenance mode space.”

In other words, AMD is redefining the maintenance mode to say that the cards will only receive security patches, “but it depends”.

AMD does not commit to supporting new games on RDNA 1 and 2

AMD’s updated statement is not very specific and may still raise doubts among its users. The impression that remains is that the company is being vague enough to have flexibility in the way it will offer optimizations for new games on previous generation cards in the future.

It is possible to speculate, then, that more popular games will still receive optimization, and that it may take longer to arrive on older GPUs, with the Radeon RX 9000 taking priority. But this is an interpretation, the company itself did not offer any further details beyond what has already been mentioned.

Driver page has not yet been updated

AMD’s latest driver has caused enough confusion that the company has had to offer new statements in a row because it has no longer been made available in a very transparent manner.

In its changelog, the phrase “support for new Vulkan games and extensions is available on Radeon RX 7000 and 9000 series products” appears. That’s where the speculation began that RX 5000 and RX 6000 cards were being left behind, and the company had to confirm later.

This phrase still appears on the Adrenalin Software 25.10.2 page, so we must still consider that dedicated GPUs based on RDNA 1 and 2 continue to be left out of the WHQL optimizations for Battlefield 6 and Bloodlines 2.
