AMD is preparing the new Ryzen Z2 processors, produced for portable gaming devices and which promise to bring several improvements to the category.
The APUs will be based on the “Strix Point” version, manufactured on 4nm and featuring an updated iGPU – as well as a higher processor core count. The intention is to compete directly with Intel’s “Lunar Lake-MX” SoCs, based on the Core Ultra 200V line – such as the MSI Claw 8 AI+.
It is worth remembering that the iGPU used in the AMD Ryzen AI 300 has 16 computational units, compared to just 12 seen in the “Phoenix” series – representing an increase of 33% in numerical terms, in addition to the use of the unprecedented RDNA 3.5 architecture, which brings improvements in energy efficiency and is optimized for the use of LPDDR5 memory.
ASUS is reportedly producing its next-generation ROG Ally handheld with AMD Ryzen Z2 processors. Reports suggest it can handle up to 1 hour of gameplay with Black Myth: Wukong on a full charge – something not even the manufacturer’s latest Z1-powered ROG Ally X could manage.
AMD and its partners have not revealed whether the Ryzen Z2 will use all 12 cores (4 Zen5 cores + 8 Zen5c cores) or if it will have a different configuration at launch. More information about the chip should be released in the future, probably in conjunction with the portable devices it will be equipped with.

It’s worth noting that AMD has a number of features that could also be used in upcoming Ryzen Z2-powered handhelds. In addition to AI features that could be used in conjunction with Windows 11-powered systems, there’s also the possibility of using AMD Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF).
There is still no confirmation of which devices will use the new processor besides ASUS, but there are also high expectations for a new model of the Steam Deck in the near future. Taking into account that Intel and MSI have already announced a version of their processors for laptops, it should not be long before we see an “answer”.
