AMD officially announced this Monday (6) its new Ryzen Z2 linecreated specifically to work with portable devices focused on games. According to the company, its new APU models will be used by companies such as ASUS, Lenovo and Valve, serving as the basis for building a second generation of the Steam Deck.
The main new model is the Z2 Extreme, which will feature 8 cores, 16 threads, 16 graphics cores and a TDP that varies between 15W and 25W. According to the company, it is based on the Strix Point architecture and will combine three Zen 5 cores and five Zen 5c coresbringing 16 RDNA 3.5 Computational Units (CUs) for better graphics performance.
The AMD Ryzen Z2 will be the intermediate model, featuring 8 cores, 16 threads and 12 graphics cores. With a TDP of 15W to 30W, it appears as an option for manufacturers who wish to provide good performance to the public, but do not necessarily intend to offer cutting-edge hardware — and at higher costs.
AMD Ryzen Z2 will have an exclusive Lenovo model
During its announcement, the company also confirmed some rumors that began circulating in December 2024. According to it, the Ryzen Z2 GO model will be an exclusive APU for the Lenovo Legion Go S, a new laptop that promises to have more modest features, at the same time at a more affordable price.
The most discreet version of AMD’s new line features only 4 Zen 3+ cores with 8 threads, TDP from 15W to 30W and 12 graphics cores. The company also confirmed other details of the leak, which already indicated that the Z2 GO will use the Zen 2 GPU architecturewhile the Ryzen Z2 uses RDNA 3 and the Z2 Extreme adopts RDNA 3.5.
Although the manufacturer has not confirmed which devices will use its new APU architecture, the fact that it mentioned ASUS and Valve already gives some signs of what the public can expect. However, so far the two companies have not yet revealed intentions to publicly disclose how they intend to use the power of AMD’s new solutions.
