One of the great highlights of the Xbox Games Showcase 2025 was the confirmation of the new Rog Ally in partnership with Xbox, the Rog Xbox Ally X and the Rog Xbox Ally. And a very important feature of these laptops is that they will mark the debut of two new APUS AMD, Ryzen Ai Z2 Extreme and Ryzen Z2 A.
AMD has a strong presence in the handheld segment, mainly due to the dedicated APUs for these devices. The processors have made their Ryzen Z form and now reach the new generation Ryzen Z2, bringing modified Strix Point components for use on consoles like Rog Ally.
Taking advantage of the arrival of these new prominent devices, AMD introduces two new options in its series that, curiously, are at both ends of the “family”: Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme is the new high end and the Ryzen Z2 A is the new most affordable variant.
The nomenclature chosen by AMD may cause some confusion due to the proximity to the names of its top line processors in the Ryzen Z2 series. However, it is no wonder the company opted for that name for the new APU, since Ryzen Ai Z2 Extreme and Z2 Extreme are almost identical.
As shown in the table above, both components come with 8 Zen 5 and 16 Threads, accompanied by an integrated GPU RDNA 3.5 16 -core GPU. They are compatible with LPDDR5X-8000 and have the same 15 to 35W TDP. The difference is in the apu that puts there in the name of Ryzen Ai Z2 Extreme, offering up to 50 tops.
The company is yet to show what would be the great advantage offered by an NPU in a portable console for games.
Ryzen Z2 A can be much more affordable
The Ryzen Z2 A, a new entry option that arrives with Ryzen Ai Z2 Extreme, can have an interesting price difference from Z2 GO, the old cheapest apu on the line.
This is because, despite offering the same 4 nuclei and 8 threads, we are talking about the Zen 2 generation instead of Zen 3+ that appears in Z2 GO. The GPU, based on RDNA 2, also comes with fewer nucles: 8, instead of 12.

It will be interesting to see, then, how much Asus intends to charge for Rog Xbox Ally and if other companies soon present their entry options for laptops with the new processor.
