AMD has confirmed that its upcoming “Kraken Point” APUs will hit the notebook market in early 2025 – targeting use in Microsoft’s Copilot+ PCs.
One of the biggest differences between the Ryzen AI 300 “Strix Point” processors and the new APUs is that we will see a drop to 8 Zen5 cores (4x Zen 5 + 4x Zen5c) and a cut to 8 computational units of the RDNA 3.5 GPU (in comparison, there are 16 with RDNA 3.5 in the Strix Point line and will reach 40, also with RDNA 3.5, in the Strix Halo).
AMD’s goal with this alleged configuration for the Kraken Point APUs is to target the more affordable AI-enabled notebook market in early 2025 – which will start at $799.
Even though it has fewer cores and computational units, it will still feature a Zen5 CPU + RDNA 3.5 + NPU XDNA 2 structure with enough TOPS to work with AIs – reaching between 45 and 50 TOPS. The intention is also to compete against a market that will already be filled with Intel Lunar Lake and Snapdragon X Plus processors).
AMD will likely announce the Kraken Point APUs alongside its upcoming Radeon RX 8000 GPUs at CES 2025. It’s important to keep in mind that plans could change by then, whether due to the company’s business plans or even issues within the tech industry itself (lack of components, rising costs, etc.).

According to ComputerBase, AMD’s goal is to bring Kraken Point APUs as cheaper options – enabling more people to enter the artificial intelligence market at a reduced cost.
Strix Point is already available from some manufacturers, but they are all premium devices and have a correspondingly high price tag. To reach the mass market, cheaper chips are needed. Ryzen and Radeon division head Jack Huynh confirmed in a conversation at IFA 2024 that Kraken will invest in this area in early 2025.
