The arrival of the Ryzen 9000 CPUs was marked by performance below that promised by AMD through press reviews. Therefore, the company has come out to explain the possible reasons for this difference in performance, in addition to promising improvements for these processors.
In an official post, AMD acknowledges that the performance of the new Zen 5 desktop processors fell short of expectations, especially in games. According to the company, in its own tests, it was possible to achieve an average jump of 9% compared to the Ryzen 7000 in games running at 1080p.

Possible causes of Ryzen 9000 performance difference
In more than 30 games tested with the Ryzen 9000 by AMD, it was possible to achieve an average advantage of 6% over the “best of the competition”, most likely the 14th generation Intel Core CPUs. This difference in relation to the worldwide reviews made the company led by Lisa Su raise the following factors as causes:
- AMD’s gaming test suite includes a broad set of esports, AAA, and popular legacy titles, which are a mix of CPU- and GPU-bound titles. Conclusions about gaming performance can be significantly influenced by the composition of the test suite.
- AMD tested Intel’s configurations using equivalent DDR5-6000 memory, as well as Intel’s default settings – a base power profile that may have a small impact on gaming performance.
- AMD also tested with Windows Virtualization-Based Security (VBS) enabled. This is Windows’ default behavior, and Microsoft recommends enabling VBS for improved security, but it may impact gaming performance.
- The Zen 5 architecture incorporates more extensive branch prediction capabilities than previous “Zen” generations. Our automated testing methodology was run in “Admin” mode, which produced results that reflect branch prediction code optimizations not present in the version of Windows that reviewers used to test the Ryzen 9000.
An update targeted at Windows 11, preview version 24H2 through the Windows Insider Program will be released by AMD to bring optimizations to the performance of Ryzen 9000 in games. This update will also bring improvements to Ryzen 7000 and 5000, but Zen 5 will benefit more.
With this, according to AMD’s tests, the Ryzen 9000 will be able to deliver up to 13% more performance in Far Cry 6, for example, and 7% more in Cyberpunk 2077. The company reinforces that this issue of below-expected performance does not affect productivity and AI workloads, only in games. There is still no date for the arrival of these improvements.
