AMD can take advantage of the difficulties that Nvidia has faced to continue selling its GPUS in China and launch its own specific solution for the country. The information comes from Digitimes and is not yet official, so they should be seen as rumors at the moment.

Following the same strategy as its competitor, AMD can launch a worse version of one of its GPUs to meet the requirements of US export rules to China. The model in question would be a R9700 Ai Pro Radeon for Workstations, based on RDNA 4 and with 32GB of GDDR6 memory.

According to unofficial information, the company would see the opportunity to compete more closely with Nvidia, now that until the H20 have been prevented from being legally sold to China. The GeForce owner would be studying the possibility of selling a 6000D RTX in the country.

While AMD would see the moment as an opportunity to compete on an equal footing with Nvidia in China, there are still some factors that can make the “red side of force” difficult.

First of all, it is important to remember that RTX plates already work with the GDDR7 generation of memory modules. In models with similar specifications, technology can be the tiebreaker.

In addition, Nvidia’s AI hardware dominance also resulted in the dominance of its tany ecosystem in the software part. Thus, AMD has to offer a product interesting enough for Chinese companies who worked with Nvidia feel that it is worth changing the whole system they use today.

Local competition can become the biggest challenge

We do not have an official announcement that AMD prepares a specific GPU for the Chinese market, although the strategy makes sense from the financial point of view. The billions that Nvidia would be losing after the H20 block show the potential of the market.

However, something that the two rivals need to take more and more about it is competition with local solutions, such as Huawei’s Ascend Chips.

While Nvidia and AMD suffer increasingly restrictive limitations for the type of GPU that they can sell in China, Huawei continues to advance in the improvements of its AI accelerators. These products are increasingly attractive to Chinese companies not only for performance, but also because they are not in danger of being barred overnight.
