A new “highly protected” server design passed through Amazon engineers in Austin, Texas on Friday. The information comes from Reuters, which detailed the server as “packed” with AI chips under development by the company. The idea is to be able to compete with Nvidia in the heated segment.
According to the website, Amazon is reportedly racing to develop faster and cheaper alternatives to Nvidia to drive AI. In this way, the technology would be used on its Amazon Web Services (AWS) servers both for the company itself and in services offered to customers. In fact, company executives have said that customers themselves have been pushing for alternatives to Nvidia, which has dominated the market.
Amazon’s AI chip designs are circulated under the names Trainium and Inferentia, so they shouldn’t be confused with the Graviton, a processor the company already uses in its servers and which has recently been shown to outperform many Xeons. Graviton chips, however, are not optimized for AI.
“So the offer is up to 40%, 50% in some cases, improved performance and price – so they’re half the price compared to the same model with Nvidia,” David Brown, vice president of compute and networking at AWS, was quoted as saying.
AI Processors: From Amazon to Amazon
The company itself is said to be a major user of a new generation of AI-focused chips. According to Reuters, sales of AWS products increased 17% in the last quarter, reaching revenue of $25 billion. Amazon controls about a third of the entire cloud computing market today.
To keep up with the momentum during Prime Day, the company reportedly used 250,000 Graviton processors and up to 80,000 custom AI chips in its servers. The event ended up generating a record $14.2 billion in sales.
Therefore, an in-house AI processor that costs less to implement would be of great use to Amazon in its data centers and cloud services.
