The increasing energy demand for domestic high-end GPUs has worried users, who are likely to find the prototype of a RTX 5090 that circulates on the internet this week. We have no official confirmation from Nvidia that the image really shows an initial project of its RTX 50 top of line, but we can see in the photo a total of four 16 -pin connectors for power.

The connections are accompanied by extra rows of VRMs, positioned next to the region to the GPU DIE. Thus, we have a sign with potential to pull up to 2,400W of energy to work, something far away than most domestic sources deliver.

Even if this is indeed a prototype of RTX 5090 – destroyed, as the PCB was cut in half – it is difficult to imagine that Nvidia even planned a commercial GPU with so much energy demand. Tom’s hardware speculates that connectors may be there as a backup of each other, or to avoid overheating in the testing phase, distributing the energy to more inputs.

RTX 5090 prototype also features a more video connection

The image cuts the region of video connections a little, but it is clear that it is five ports rather than the standard of four connections on the finished RTX 5090. Again, it may be a specific situation for a test model, but it calls the jogging that one of the connections is marked with an “x”, possibly indicating not to be used.

Even so, Tom’s hardware raises the possibility that the prototype could even be of a more advanced plate, such as initial tests of a 5090 IT or something. In this case, the PCB would have to have more memories in the back, because in the image only the standard capacity of Vram from 5090 appears.

Anyway, it’s just an interesting piece from the history of the RTX 50 series that didn’t go ahead.
