AMD announced the chipsets AMD X870 e AMD X870E together with the processors Ryzen 9000 based on the Zen5 architecture. These new chipsets bring the best and most current technologies and specifications to the AM5 motherboard platform and compatible CPUs.

The announcement took place in Taipei during the Computex 2024, an event where the world’s leading computer manufacturers announce new features for the current year. The new products hit the market in July, but prices have not yet been announced by AMD.

Support for Ryzen 7000 and Ryzen 9000 processors

The X870 and X870E chipsets support all Ryzen 7000 processors, in addition to the new Ryzen 5 9600X, Ryzen 7 9700X, Ryzen 9 9900X and Ryzen 9 9950X models. As usual, they should also support CPU models that will be released in the future for socket AM5.

AMD announces Ryzen 9000 processors and AMD 800 Series chipsets

As happened with the Series 600 chipset models in the enthusiast segment, the AMD 800 line comes in two versions, the AMD X870 which is the top of the line, and the AMD X870E, a slightly more modest version, but also intended for motherboards. (motherboars / mainboards) for the enthusiast segment, that is, offering all the best and most advanced for the platform.

What’s new about the AMD X870 and X870E chipsets

Both chipsets feature connection as a highlight USB4 on all mainboards, a type of certification by AMD to ensure that all boards with this chipset feature technologies that differentiate them from models with cheaper and simpler chipsets.

Connections PCIe 5.0 (PCIe Gen5) are also on all cards, both in the PCIe x16 slot for video cards and other dedicated cards and in the NVMe connections for M.2 SSDs. AMD doesn’t make it clear, but in the last generation the difference is that the model without E can have a component in PCIe x16 and another in M.2 working in PCIe 5.0, while the one with E in only one of them.

Another new feature highlighted by AMD is the support for memory technology AMD EXPO of high frequency. Ryzen 9000 processors support memories with 5600MTs / MHz by default (above the 5200MTs of the Ryzen 7000 generation), but we will certainly see kits well above that, exceeding 7000MT/s and even 8000 MT/s.

Soon we will do reviews and articles in text and video on some motherboard models with the new chipsets.

AMD Ryzen 9000 processor specifications

Below is a table with technical specifications of the first 4 processors in the AMD Ryzen 9000 line announced.

The new ones CPUs based on the Zen5 architecture are manufactured in 4nm and through the top-of-the-line model Ryzen 9 9950X it reaches up to 5.7GHz with 16 cores and 32 threads. The simplest model announced so far is the Ryzen 5 9600X, a line that is usually successful due to its good value for money. The 9600X has 6 cores and 12 threads, reaching 5.4GHz in Boost mode.
