AirPods 4 will replace AirPods 2 and 3 at the same time

Next month, Apple is set to hold its highly anticipated iPhone 16 launch event. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the company will use the occasion to introduce updates to its entry-level and mid-range AirPods.

Currently, consumers can choose between the AirPods 2 (or second generation, released in 2019), the AirPods 3 (or third generation) and the second generation AirPods Pro. However, the nomenclature and features of the models can cause confusion, leading many to wonder which is the best option.

Gurman suggests that Apple intends to update its non-Pro AirPods to the fourth generation. This will include two versions: a base model and a higher-priced model with active noise cancellation — a feature that, until now, has been exclusive to the AirPods Pro.

With this update, Apple may be planning to completely replace the second and third-generation AirPods, simplifying its product lineup and making it easier for consumers to choose.

While the transition to the new generation could simplify the product lineup, Gurman believes Apple may continue selling the AirPods 3 for a short period, at a reduced price, after the AirPods 4 launch.

This could mean a limited supply until the AirPods 3 are discontinued, thus keeping a more affordable option on the market during this transition.

Change has legal reasons

One of the reasons Apple is updating its entire AirPods lineup could be related to new regulations in the European Union. The EU recently passed laws requiring electronic devices to use USB-C ports.

The current second- and third-generation AirPods still use Apple’s proprietary Lightning connector, which puts them outside the new requirements. By updating its products to include USB-C ports, Apple not only complies with the new regulations, but also provides greater uniformity across its device lineup.

In addition to the inclusion of USB-C, the AirPods 4 should bring other significant improvements. Active noise cancellation, which until now was restricted to the AirPods Pro, may be available on the premium version of the AirPods 4.

Other expected features include a wireless charging case, head gesture controls, and improved noise isolation. All models are expected to receive support for spatial audio and the ability to be charged wirelessly using an Apple Watch charger.

What about AirPods Pro?

While the AirPods 4 are expected to receive significant updates, the big question is whether Apple will also update the AirPods Pro to a third generation. Since the AirPods Pro already use a USB-C charging case, there is less of a need for an urgent update.

However, Apple is expected to reveal more details about all of its AirPods models during its September event.
