Sales of the Xbox Series X in Japan soared after the announcement of an imminent price increase by a competitor PlayStation 5a change that is expected to come into effect as early as next week.
According to reliable source Automaton, Yodobashi Camera, one of the country’s largest electronics retailers, has seen a significant increase in sales of Microsoft’s console, which has reached No. 8 on this morning’s best-seller lists.

Xbox Series X wasn’t even among the top 100 best-selling products in the category
This jump is particularly impressive considering that, just a day earlier, the Xbox Series X did not even feature in the top 100 best-selling products in that category.
Apparently, with the price of the PS5 rising, the Xbox Series X emerges as a more viable and economical option for consumers, presenting a price difference that is now around US$100 less.
In addition, there is another aggravating issue for Sony and its PlayStation 5: it has become increasingly difficult to find units available for sale in Japan. This is because the units that were in stock before the aforementioned price increase flew off the shelves, quickly selling out in the vast majority of stores.
Sony sales fluctuate ahead of PS5 Pro announcement
This sales boost represents a major turnaround for Microsoft, especially considering the challenges the Xbox Series X and S have faced in the Japanese market since their launches.
With plans to expand the lineup with new features like the launch of an Xbox Series X All-Digital equipped with a 2TB SSD drive, Microsoft is certainly excited about this recent sales success.
On the other hand, Sony seems to be navigating turbulent waters with its PlayStation 5, especially at a time when there is speculation that the company is about to announce a new model, the PlayStation 5 Pro, as early as September.
Even promises of significant technical improvements, such as the inclusion of the new PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution upscaler, may not be able to sway Japanese consumers’ decision, especially considering the powerful appeal of popular games like “Monster Hunter Wilds.”
That title, while highly desired and frequently discussed on social media as a strong reason to purchase a PS5, is also available for the Xbox, thus diluting the argument that could justify the extra investment in Sony’s console.
