After 30 years at the top, Samsung loses title of biggest DRAM manufacturer for SK Hynix

Finance reports for the first half of 2025 from Samsung and SK Hynix reflect a historical but not surprising change in the position of the largest DRAM manufacturers in the world. Now it’s official: after 33 years at the top, Samsung has lost its position to its country rival.

Samsung reported that its market share in the DRAM memories fell to 32.7% in the first half of 2025, falling from the 41.5% that the company had at the end of 2024. It is a drop of 8.8% in six months, the largest in the company’s history. In addition, it is the first time since 2014 that the company is in the dozen 30% in its presence in the segment.

SK Hynix, meanwhile, doesn’t stop growing. From 27.7% in 2022 the company went to 29.9% in 2023 and already to 33.4% in 2024. Maintaining its pace, now the company reached 36.3% in the first half of 2025, surpassing its rival and effectively becoming the largest DRAM manufacturer today.

In a hype -dominated world with the Generative AI, it is obvious that it is worth having as a client the company that most profits in the segment: Nvidia. The growth of SK Hynix is very attributed to its proximity to the GeForce owner, providing HBM3E components for the manufacture of its GPUs and AI accelerators.

No wonder SK Hynix has been talking about growth potential for a long time with HBM and invests heavily to stay ahead in these components.

Samsung, in turn, provides HBM3E to AMD and Broadcom, but failed to close an expressive agreement with Nvidia. We have only rumors of advances in its supply of memories to the AI giant.
